Durham, Maine — June 14, 2025 A tragic accident on Saturday evening has claimed the life of a local motorcyclist in Durham, Maine. The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that 32-year-old Coplin Fickett, a resident of Durham, was killed in a collision involving a motorcycle and a dump truck near 1101 Hallowell Road at approximately 6:12 PM on June 14, 2025.
The Incident
According to preliminary findings from the Crash Reconstruction Unit, Mr. Fickett was operating a 1986 Suzuki LS650 motorcycle and traveling northbound on Hallowell Road when the crash occurred. At the same time, a 2025 Peterbilt 589 dump truck, driven by 24-year-old Thomas Mosier of Pownal, was attempting to exit the Jaiden Landscaping gravel pit and make a left-hand turn onto the southbound lane of Hallowell Road.
As the dump truck crossed into the northbound lane during the turn, Mr. Fickett, coming around a nearby curve, was suddenly faced with the obstructing vehicle. In a desperate attempt to avoid impact, he laid the motorcycle down, a maneuver often employed by motorcyclists in emergencies. Despite this effort, the motorcycle collided with the side of the truck.
Coplin Fickett was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
A Devastating Loss
The news of Fickett’s passing has sent a wave of grief throughout the Durham community. Known as a hard-working, humble, and kind-hearted individual, Coplin was well-regarded by friends, neighbors, and family alike. He was an experienced rider who had a deep love for the road, and he took great care in how he rode. Those who knew him describe him as steady, thoughtful, and always willing to lend a hand.
“This is just devastating. Coplin was the kind of person who made life better just by being around. He was quiet but genuine. He loved to ride, but he also loved his community,” said one family friend.
Response and Investigation
The crash prompted a large-scale emergency response. Alongside the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office, the following agencies assisted at the scene:
Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit, which inspected the dump truck and its compliance with commercial safety standards.
Durham Fire and Rescue, which provided emergency medical support and fire suppression if needed.
Durham Public Works, which assisted in traffic control and scene safety.
Brunswick Police Department, which provided additional logistical support.
The dump truck, which is owned by Moon Construction Services, LLC, sustained minimal damage. Driver Thomas Mosier was uninjured and remained on scene to cooperate with investigators. No charges have been filed at this time, and the crash remains under active investigation.
Community Shock and Safety Concerns
The fatal crash has stirred concerns about traffic safety near the Jaiden Landscaping gravel pit, particularly in regard to large commercial vehicles entering and exiting onto a winding stretch of road with limited visibility. Residents have long voiced concerns about the speed and safety along this stretch of Hallowell Road, and Saturday’s tragedy has renewed calls for local officials to assess the area and consider additional signage or road improvements.
“I’ve lived on this road for 20 years,” one resident said. “We’ve had close calls before. This isn’t the first time someone’s been in danger because of poor sight lines and big trucks pulling out. Now someone has died. We can’t ignore this anymore.”
Remembering Coplin Fickett
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on honoring the memory of Coplin Fickett. His life, though tragically cut short, was marked by quiet strength, genuine compassion, and an unwavering love for his family, his hometown, and the freedom of the open road.
Loved ones have already begun organizing a memorial ride to honor Coplin’s life, inviting fellow motorcyclists to gather and ride in tribute to a man who lived life on two wheels with respect and responsibility. A candlelight vigil is also being planned in Durham, where friends and neighbors can gather to mourn, share stories, and celebrate the life of someone taken too soon.
A Community in Mourning
In moments like this, words often fail to capture the depth of loss, but the outpouring of support from the community reflects just how loved and valued Coplin was. Tributes continue to flood social media, with friends posting photos, memories, and messages of gratitude for having known him.
Rest in peace, Coplin Fickett.
Forever in our hearts. Always remembered. Never replaced.
